Preparing for Surgery

Undergoing surgery is a scary process for anyone. However, doing the right things to prepare for it, as well as knowing what to expect during surgery may help to ease your mind.

These are some of the do’s and don’ts in regards to preparing for and recovering from breast augmentation surgery:

DO…

DON’T…

Make arrangements to have someone drive you to and from the operation

Do not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications

Arrange for someone to care for you the first 24-72 hours after surgery

Do not smoke for the two weeks before surgery and the two weeks after surgery. Smoking increases the risk of complications.

Obtain a copy of the manufacturer's device sticker. It identifies the brand of the implant you will receive, its size, and the manufacturer's lot number. This data should be part of your personal medical record. It will be useful if you should have problems following surgery or seek care from another health care provider

Do not eat any foods containing Salicylate:
almonds, apples, apricots, blackberries,
boysenberries, cherries, Chinese black beans, cucumbers, currants, garlic, ginger, grapes, pickles, prunes, raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes, wine

Obtain a copy of the manufacturer's package insert for the breast implant you will receive. It contains information about precautions to be taken and risks associated with your particular implant. Keep it for future reference.

Do not consume the following herbal products: Vitamin E, Vitamin C , St. John's Wort, Gingko Biloba, Echinacea, Garlic, Willow Bark Products

On the day of surgery, wear loose clothing which will be easy to get off and on after operation (a shirt that buttons in front)

You must not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight hours prior to the surgery.

Set up home recovery area: lots of pillows, books, magazines, journal, stationery, T.V., remote control, videos, favorite CDs, etc…

Do not wear any nail polish, make-up, deodorant, hair gel, or hair spray on the day of surgery.

Fill prescriptions for pain killers and antibiotics before surgery

Do not attempt to drive yourself or take a taxi home after surgery – arrange a lift.
